Water-damaged phone: what to do before you come in

· Mobiz team

Close-up of a smartphone ready for a water-damage check

If your phone took a dunk or sat in heavy rain, turn it off and leave it off. Charging a wet device, or shaking it and pressing buttons, pushes water further into the board. Skip the rice — it does not pull moisture out of a sealed phone and it leaves dust behind.

Pat the outside dry, remove the case, and if the SIM tray opens easily, take the SIM out so you still have your number. Do not open the phone yourself. Modern handsets are glued shut, and a pry tool can crack the screen on top of the water damage.

Bring it to Casey Central as soon as you can. We open the device, look for corrosion, and tell you whether a clean and dry is enough or whether a part needs replacing. You get that assessment before any paid work starts.

Water damage is not always visible on day one. If the phone turns on but the speaker, camera or charging port is intermittent, say so when you book. We would rather see it early than after a week in a drawer.
